The Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) is responsible for the operation of all bus services in the greater metropolitan area through commercial contract arrangements under the Transperth brand. It also operates public transport services and road coach services to regional areas under the Transwa brand, and administers and manages School Bus Services (SBS). There are currently 850 orange school buses and 1500 independent licensed tour buses in WA.
The amount of freight moved in WA is expected to triple in the 2013/14 period due in part to demand by the mining industry, particularly with regard to Over Size Over Mass (OSOM) loads.
It is estimated that there are 2,000 taxis in WA, 1,000 of which are privately owned, with the remainder being Government leased. The taxi industry in WA records approximately 26 million boardings per year.

Approximately 63% of workers in this industry have no post school qualifications; 24% have a certificate qualification; 6% have a diploma qualification and 6% have a tertiary qualification. Poor language, literacy and numeracy skills have been identified, particularly amongst road transport drivers and forklift operators. This causes difficulties for workers who are increasingly required to multitask and complete more paperwork.
