Information for Employers

With the current skills crisis and the ageing population of the transport industry, it has never been more important than now to look towards attracting and engaging young people into the industry. Research has shown that the industry has a poor image, a low profile and a lack of clear career pathways for young people. There are a number of organisations who are actively involved in addressing these problems and a number of initiatives available through State and Federal funding. These include the following:

  • School Based Traineeships
  • Workplace Learning
  • Traineeships
  • Pathways Program

School Based Traineeships
School based traineeships provide an opportunity for full time secondary school students to begin preparing themselves for a career in the workforce. They can develop their skills and work towards secondary graduation and an industry recognised qualification. School based traineeships can open up new career and employment opportunities and enhance students' enterprise skills.

Benefits for Employers
Taking on a school based trainee is a low cost effective way to meet specific needs of the business and contribute to ensuring industry skill requirements are being addressed.
Financial assistance is available to help meet the cost of taking on a school based trainee. For information on employer incentives please refer to the Australian Apprenticeships link below.
Students are keen and interested to participate as they undertake a recruitment and selection process that requires them to demonstrate their committment and motivation to take up a school based traineeship.
Create goodwill for your business. The values and attitudes students learn in a school based traineeship are likely to stay with them for their working life.
Provide school leavers the relevant training and skills to work effectively and efficiently in your industry.

If you would like more information regarding this worthwhile initiative please visit the Apprenticentre Website for more information.

Workplace Learning
Workplace Learning (WPL) is an accredited Curriculum Council Course and/or an Endorsed Program for senior school students to work in industry for a nominated number of hours per year. WPL can be done in a block or as day release. The system is flexible and times and dates can be negotiated with the employer. Insurance is covered and no payment is required. Tasks undertaken by the student are negotiated with the employer, in order for the student to achieve a set of specified skills  assessed by the employer.
Workplace Learning is a great way to introduce young people to your company and to observe students who may be potential employees. The company may choose to offer employment or to take students on as school based trainees. Current employees can also benefit by working as mentors for the students and developing their own training skills.

Please contact your local secondary school or the LTC for more information.

Traineeships
A traineeship is a full-time or part-time employment-based training arrangement over a one or two-year period. The trainee completes a nationally recognised Certificate II or Certificate III qualification relevant to his/her job role whilst on the job. Funding is available through the Commonwealth Government. For information on incentive funding please refer to the Australian Apprenticeships link below. See the attached fact sheet for helpful hints on selecting a Registered Training Organisation.
