MARITIME INDUSTRY
There are 2 divisions of regulatory requirements for occupations within the Austrlian Maritime Industry in regards to the Maritime Training Package. These divisions are: Coastal Operations and Ocean-going Operations.
Coastal Operations encompasses domestic marine operations within the jurisdication of State and Territory marine authorities. This covers all occupations defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D 'Crew Competencies". Occupations included in this category are:
- Coxswain
- Marine Engine Driver Grade 3
- Master Class 5 and Skipper Grade 3
- Marine Engine Driver Grade 2
- Master Class 4 and Skipper Grade 2
- Marine Engine Driver Grade 1
- Engineer Class 3
- Master Class 3 and Skipper Grade 2
Ocean-going Operations encompasses all international maritime operations and occupations defined within Marine Orders - Part 3, Section 6 under the Navigation Act (1912). Occupations included in this category are:
- Integrated Rating
- Watchkeeper (Deck)
- Master (<500 GT)
- Engineer Watchkeeper
- Master (Unlimited)
- Master (<3,000 GT)
- Chief Mate (Unlimited)
- Chief Mate (<3,000 GT)
- Engineer Class 1
- Engineer Class 2
Also included in the Maritime training package is a section for General Maritime Qualifications. This relates to occupations not specifically aligned with regulated occupations and include those that require competency in basic maritime safety, survival and emergency skills as well as other skills used on vessels. Occupations included in this category are:
- General Purpose Hands
- Marine Cooks
- Marine Stewards
- Marine Tourist Personnel
- Marine Emergency Services Staff
- Fishing Crew
- Shore-based Linespersons
- Marine Tourist Guides
- Marine Pilots
- Harbour Service Personnel
