2010 WA Training Awards – Reward your Brightest

Nominations are now open for the WA Training Awards organised by the Department of Education and Training. The Awards, which are in their 16th year, recognise and reward outstanding achievements of apprentices, trainees and vocational students, and the contribution to training made by trainers, training organisations and employers.

You are urged to nominate your own company or a student, trainee, trainer or organisation you think would be a worthwhile recipient of such a prestigious award. There are twelve categories – five student categories, one trainer category and six organisational categories. If you would like to nominate for an award, please contact the LTC, so we can provide assistance in completing the application.

State winners may be eligible to represent the State at the Australian Training Awards in Sydney on 19 November 2010.

Skills West Expo Launch

The Western Australian Government has announced a new partnership with the West Australian Newspaper to provide a free public event to showcase industry areas and occupations that are in demand by Western Australian employers, in order to meet the challenges of labour and skill shortages.

The Skills West Expo will be held from 3 to 5 September 2010 at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre to promote occupations, and encourage study, training employment and career change opportunities that are key to the State’s future success.

 

Industry Workforce Development Plans 

The LTC, in conjunction with the Department of Training and Workforce Development, is currently working on a Workforce Development Plan which will provide valuable input in the State’s Workforce Development Plan.

 The LTC will be consulting with its industry sectors in the near future to identify the major issues that will impact on the attraction and retention of employees in the workforce and to confirm the findings of the environmental scan that is currently being prepared. Your input into this consultation process is extremely important as it will be your opportunity to raise issues that are impacting on your industry with the Government.  

 

Private Providers’ Forum 

The 2010 Private Providers’ Forum will be held on Friday 23 April 2010 at the Rendezvous Observation City Hotel in Scarborough between 8.30 am and 5.00 pm. To maximise this opportunity for Training Councils to network with RTOs, time has been set aside during lunch for the RTOs to catch up with the Training Councils.

 

Australian Workforce Futures 

On 5 March 2010 Skills Australia launched its paper – ‘Workforce Futures – a National Workforce Development Strategy’ reporting recommendations for a fundamental overhaul in the way the nation approaches and supports workforce development at a national, industry and enterprise level. The vision for this strategy is that Australia has the required workforce capability for a productive, sustainable and inclusive future and Australian enterprises have the capacity to develop and use the skills of their workforce to maximum advantage for the benefit of industry and the community. 

 

Training Forum 2010 

The 2010 Training Forum organised by the Department of Training and Workforce Development will be held from 10-11 May 2010 at the Burswood Entertainment Complex. (Please note it will not include 12 May as previously advertised.) The forum will showcase good practices in training and workforce development enhance the training system; encourage greater industry involvement and increase participation in the workforce.

The LTC will be hosting a booth and will be available to talk to training providers during the forum. Jillian Dielesen, the LTC’s CEO and Eddie Suidgeest, the National Manager for Workforce Development from the Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLISC) will be running a workshop on Monday 10 May from 3.30 to 5.00 pm. This is titled ‘Industries on the move. How the transport and logistics industry will drive Australia into the future’, and will give participants the opportunity to hear the findings of workforce development which has been conducted by both organisations, and how information will be utilised to influence State and Federal government decisions regarding training immigration and other policy areas.
